Drive Safely - Kids are in School!

Last week a neighborhood dog got loose and made his way over to the elementary school. Between the time the school called the owner, and the owner came to retrieve the dog, someone sped through the school pickup area (it has a 5 mph limit) and ran over the dog, killing it.

Whomever hit that dog, was a coward and took off, leaving the dead dog laying in the school driveway.

That 100 pound dog could have been your child!

Take a look at your own driving habits - if you tend to speed over the 5 mph limit when you go to drop off or pick up your child at the elementary school, BE AWARE you are jeopardizing other people's kids.

It's a shame someone's 100 pound dog was killed in a 5mph zone - it would be beyond tragic if that was someone's child. SLOW DOWN in school zones.

Town Politics

Hello Olathe.
This week I am curios to know what you all think about the turmoil in our town government concerning the resignation/termination of Finance Director and Town Treasurer, Pamela Woods and the roles played by Town Admin Scott Harold and Mayor Perkins in the matter? Are you pleased with the way the Board of Trustees is handling the situation? Is there more going on than just small town politics? Where is the line between right and wrong and just how safe is a person's job? As a community, where is this leading us and how will we as citizens handle it? What will happen from here? From my perspective, it will certainly be interesting to watch itself play out and in the end I have my fingers and toes crossed that good will triumph.
We at The Messenger as well as the entire town would very much like to hear your thoughts and opinions surrounding this so please drop us a line.

You have 1 life and there are no power-ups

Matt Smelser, OHS Class of 2009 Valedictorian, made an excellent graduation speech combining adult wisdom and youthful outlooks.

My favorite line from Matt's speech (printed in its entirety in the May 20, 2009 issue of the Olathe Messenger) is "Class of 2009, go into this world and don't mess up. This isn't like a video game. You have one life and there are no power-ups."

Another great point:

" In all my years of watching my mom and grandma, I have learned 3 things about mothers:

1) No matter how old you are or how far away you move, your mother will always own you.

2) Your mom will always have the veto power, even if you are president.

3) Your mother is always right. End of story. "

I like this young man, and I haven't met him. His words are funny, wise, goofy, cool and thought provoking. I hope we get an update from him a few years down the road.

Some parting thoughts from Matt's speech:

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord." Colossians 3:23

Wise words for all of us.

Colgate Showdown coming to Olathe

Garth Brooks. Tim McGraw. Sara Evans. Brad Paisley.

Some of the greats in country music have been launched from the Colgate Country Showdown talent contest through the years. And this year, at the Olathe Sweet Corn Festival, we may see the next star at the State Finals.

This is a really good move on the part of the Activities Department, and the benefits to Olathe are great. Most important will be the national publicity for the Corn Fest that will be done through the event promoters, including local radio promotion leading up to the Corn Fest on Saturday, August 1.

This is in addition to having country music star Clint Black performing as the headliner.

See the May 29 issue of the Messenger to read the article by Matt Bufwack. And buy your reserved seating tickets now for the Corn Fest - they are going fast!

Town Board meetings - Y'all come!

I went to the recent Town Board meeting on April 27. I saw a group of interested and concerned people working together to make the best decisions for the town - that was impressive.

The board members, town manager, town clerk and attorney spend several hours working through the business of running the town, and it would be great if more people took an interest.

- Did you know there is discussion about putting in separate water meters for landscaping? If you are a homeowner in Olathe, you may find this useful to know. And if you have an opinion about this, you should let the Board know.

- Bobbi Sale of the Activities Department was there to tell us how the Corn Fest is shaping up for this year.

- Did you know there is work in progress to put pipes in irrigation ditches to reduce the leaching of selenium into the water system? There was a very interesting report presented at the meeting. I'm sorry I missed the woman's name and organization.

- Did you know the Olathe Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the car show event during Corn Fest this year?

- Did you know that the budget for the town is on target for the 1st quarter of 2009?

- Did you know the Town is pressuring our government leaders to help Olathe put the dormitory into use as it was originally planned?

- Did you know that the organization that used to provide senior meals at the Olathe Community Center has changed, and a new group (Volunteers of America) have taken it over?

You would have learned that and much more by attending Monday's meeting. Maybe you aren't interested in every topic they discuss and decide on, but all of it is important to the life and health of our community.

- Let's get involved in how the town is run, give the board some support and input about what you want that is good for the town.

Anyone interested in how the town is run, and want input on which decisions are made, should go to these meetings; they are very informative yet sparsely attended.

Meet me at the next board meeting - they are held the 2nd & 4th Mondays of each month, 6:30pm at the Town Hall. The board has a "working meeting" prior to that, and the public is welcome there too.

See you there!
