When to plant a garden in Olathe

From Tami B.: I just moved here and am wanting to plant a garden is it too early? Can anyone give me some tips to get started?

  1. Hi Tami, good question! My neighbor, Jimmy McCracken, is a farmer and he tells me it's good to wait until mid to late May to put out unprotected plants in a garden. We've had hard freezes as late as the end of May, and that could kill your plants.

There is lots you can do now, though. Prepare your garden area; make a sketch of where you want to plant what; find out what grows best and what is hardest to grow here.

You can start some plants indoors, but look at the germination time to make sure you don't start them too soon. You want them ready to plant outdoors about 8 weeks from now. If you start seeds too soon, they will get long and leggy in their starter pots before you can plant them outdoors.

The best resource is the Tri-Counties Extension office in Montrose (at Friendship Hall). They know all kinds of great stuff for gardening around here. And they can test the soil for you. On the internet: http://xr.com/d9m

    Good luck!
